Tools and Terminology


"Man is a tool-using animal... Without tools he is nothing" (Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881).

"Words are the best medium of exchange of thoughts and ideas between people" (William Ross).


Tools

Tools fall into three categories. First, there are the physical tools used for library functions such as book repair, shelving, circulation, photocopying. You will encounter a great deal of this kind of tool when you take the Practicum class, working in a library.

Second, there are reference materials used by library staff, such as the LC Classification books, notes on the circulation rules, signage, etc.

Third, there are the communication tools, such as email and the Web which allow us to ask questions of others, search for user needs, and communicate with other professionals.
