Libraries have always existed to serve their target audience. Until recently, that involved serving the interests of the wealthy and powerful. Many individuals have personal libraries suited to their specific tastes.
Public libraries, which became popular in the U.S., are meant to educate and entertain the masses. They are especially dedicated to the free exchange of information and ideas as the foundation of democracy.
Medical libraries, law libraries, business libraries, and other special libraries specialize in one subject area.
College, university, and school libraries exist to support the curriculum and to assist students in research.
