To enhance the process of service learning, the following guidelines have been established for the students, faculty, and participating agencies of the Palo Alto College Service Learning Program.


Guidelines

Responsibilities of the STUDENTS

1) Perform 24 hours of service learning at the chosen site.

2) Be punctual for the service learning activities.

3) Follow the established sign-in procedure at the chosen site. The tabulation of your hours is critical for both the success of the service learning AND the credit for time worked.

4)Follow any and all dress code regulations, if applicable.

5) Follow any and all rules of conduct and procedure at the chosen site.

6)IF you are unable to keep a scheduled visit, please follow the established procedure to inform the site of your absence.

REMEMBER that you are a representative of Palo Alto College!!


Responsibilities of the FACULTY member

1) Clearly explain the option of service learning to your students.

2) Determine the process and activity(ies) of service learning in your class(es).

3) Process all necessary paperwork and forward such to the Coordinator.

4) Monitor the service learning activities of your students.

5) Conduct reflective sessions for your service learning students as you deem feasible.

6)Prepare a short (1-2 paragraphs) report to the Coordinator on the semester activities in your class(es).


Responsibilities of the Service Learning SITE

1) Provide training to the service learning students, if necessary.

2) Provide written guidelines for site rules and regulations.

3) Provide a sign-in sheet location. (Palo Alto College will provide the sign in sheet).

4) Provide a location for the service learning activity, i.e. Library, cafeteria, etc.

5) Provide a contact person at the site for the service learning students.

6) Provide verification of student completion of 24 hours of service learning. Palo Alto College will provide the verification form.

7) Provide a short (1-2 paragraphs) report to the Service Learning Coordinator at the end of the semester.

ACTION AT P.A.C. - Learn about critical issues facing our world and what you can do about those issues. Letter writing will be a major aspect of this agency.

WESLEY COMMUNITY CENTER MID-HIGH PROGRAM - Be involved with middle and high school students. Activities include tutoring, computer work, recreational activities, and field trips. The hours are 3:30 to 6:00 on school days.

BOB HOPE ELEMENTARY - Work with elementary students to improve their academic skills, such as reading, math, spelling and other school assignments.
