Leptospirosis

"...leptospirosis [is] a rare, severe, and contagious bacterial infection... If your dog contracts lepto he is not only at risk for developing a serious illness, he also poses a threat to other dogs and to you...

""Lepto" vaccines don't provide protection against all the strains.. more than 200...

"WHen infected, a maintenance host rarely becomes sick but can shed immense numbers of organisms for extended periods... it can be passed from animals to people...

"Lepto can damage the kidneys, the pancreas, and the liver.

"Protecting dogs from leptospirosis is just as difficult as diagnosing it."

Make sure your vet is giving the new vaccine which includes four strains of lepto -- canicola, icterohaemorrhagiae, grippotyphosa, and pomona -- not the old version which only includes the first two strains. (Grognet, Jeff. "The Struggle Against Leptospirosis." AKC Gazette, August 2003, 24-25).
