The postal service does not take any money from taxpayers and is one of the largest employers of military veterans in the United States.
Until 2006, the US Post Office was profitable. But then Congress passed the"Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act." It required the USPS to fund retirement for it's employees 75 years into the future. No other company is required to do this.
Essentially, the Republicans want to corporatize the USPS. They say it is because it is now running in the red. But, we know better. Get rid of that act of Congress, and it would be making profits again.
Worse, starting 2006, every time the Postmaster General submitted rules and regulations for the USPS, the Congress has refused to accept them, instead accepting the recommendations of a bunch of GOP corporate flunkies.
